Premier League clubs should need to look overseas to fill vacancies, according to the guy who attracted David De Gea to Manchester United.
De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expires next summer and Eric Steele, who recruited the Spaniard from Atletico Madrid, believes there’s more English talent than at any stage in the past decade and there must no more be any necessity to look abroad for replacements.
Steele was United’s goalkeeping coach when De Gea came in England to replace Edwin van der Sar and then coached him for his first two seasons at the club.
He says there was a dearth of English goalkeeping ability available back then which is why he and several other Premier League clubs – seemed to bring in’keepers from overseas. But that may not have to be the case nine years if United cannot tied De Gea to fresh terms and will need to supply a replacement.
“Yeah, I did it. And as you know, it had been in a club that is very major. At the moment, I had to have a good look about,” Steele told Sky Sports News.
“I seem today, and it’s come half ring – maybe not very complete circle yet, but it has got to promote us. As an England setup, it’s good to have more Language keepers playing in the Premier League, and long may it continue.”
Steele is now an integral figure within the FA, training the goalkeeping coaches of the country in the way to develop young talent.
The benefits of that talent development are showing clear effects with Jordan Pickford (Everton), Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), Nick Pope (Burnley), Dean Henderson (Sheffield United, on loan from Manchester United), Angus Gunn (Southampton) and Aaron Ramsdale (Bournemouth) making a healthy list of seven English goalkeepers – including Watford veteran Ben Foster – playing in the Premier League.
“We have probably now obtained the best depth [from English goalkeeping], so St George’s Park has worked. The DNA is ideal. We’re currently seeing the fruition of the – we have won tournaments. And developed a lot of talent,” Steele explained.
He says the development of Ramsdale, who has started all four Premier League matches for Bournemouth much this year, provides the ideal illustration.
“Ramsdale was with me in England’s junior teams a few years back, he carried on through the U20s, U21s, and he is now playing Premier League soccer. That is growth, which is what we need.
“Now he’s playing as one of those seven English goalkeepers in the Premier League. We’ve got a depth of talent which should see us fine for another 10-15 decades.”
Steele also believes a revolution in was marked by De Gea’s arrival in England.
“Back then, concerning the work you would perform on the practice pitch, it’d probably be 70 per cent focused on the hands – ensuring you keep it from the web – and 30 percent on the toes, together with the chunk. Now, it’s probably reversed,” he continued.
“Premier League coaches have realised that the favorable impact keepers can have on the group. It’s developed immeasurably over the previous ten years.”
Steele says goalkeepers are shipped out to some portion of the training ground to clinic. He says typically, they at the heart of the group, involved in defensive and attacking drills, and are expected to moves in training, and in games.

“You have got to have this. I believe you need to keep the ball out of the internet. But look at Alisson, look at Ederson. Look at Pickford for England,” Steele said.
“Steve Holland (Southgate’s helper ) did a semester here [with the senior England team ] yesterday – an entire session about the best way to guard setup plays. And which that brings the right into the center but he did that in a game environment.
“It’s closeness with all the hands and the feet – cope with all the shots and the crosses nonetheless out of possession, goalkeepers now have to sweep behind their defence.
“It is about a sense of risk, and an awareness of how to create attacks. And you must do that within a team framework.”
