Batsman Joe Denly says England are a”better team” with Jason Roy within their side after he confirmed he will swap places with all the opener to the fourth Ashes Test against Australia.
Roy has fought in the series so far, scoring 57 runs in six innings.
He will drop to number four to the Old Trafford Test, which starts on Wednesday, together with Denly taking his position.
Denly said it’s”good for England cricket” which Roy will continue to keep his location.
“I got a call from Joe Root after a bit of time away and he said he would prefer for me to really go on peak of the purchase and attempt to get us off to a good beginning,” Denly told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Clearly Jason’s likely to bat .”
The batting opened in his England debut against West Indies this year but scored 17 and six before going into number three and later number four.
He averages 24.33 from his six Tests but made a significant half-century in England’s second innings of the third Test at Headingley, which the hosts won to measure the series at 1-1 with 2 games to play.
After starring in England’s 50-over World Cup-winning group within a competitive opening batsman roy was introduced, however, his score at the Ashes series is simply 28.
As opposed to discard the Surrey batsman England have opted to move him down the order to face an ball.
“With Jason Roy from the group, I think we’re a better team for sure,” Denly explained.
“With him coming at four with the new ball worn away, and myself and Rory [England opener Rory Burns] doing our jobs at the top, it enables him to come in and play his way.
“He’s a dangerous player so he’s great to have there.”
