Somerset’s Tom Banton has won the August PCA Player of the Month award following an month which saw him score his T20 century.
Banton was the clear winner with 53 per cent of the general vote, ahead of team-mate Tom Abell (22 per cent) Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth (13 percent ) and Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen (12 per cent).
The four-man shortlist had been chosen by the Most Valuable Player Rankings of the PCA, together with all the nominees scoring MVP points than anyone in August.
Fans who voted via the PCA along with Sky Sports sites then had the Last say, with Banton becoming the fifth different participant to win the award this season, following Liam Dawson at April, Simon Harmer in May, Hassan Azad in June and Ravi Ashwin at July.
“It is obviously a very special moment. It is always nice to see my name join a listing of these gifted players,” said Banton, 20.
While Somerset duo Lewis Gregory along with Craig Overton are flying high in the MVP banton was nominated for the award along with Abell.
“It is fantastic having such amazing players around you. They have helped me a lot as I’ve come to the group that’s nice for me being a youngster and being in my very first year.”
For Banton, the month found him score 428 runs in an average of 38.9 across both formats together along with his highlight undoubtedly his maiden T20 hundred from Kent at Taunton.
“I have never felt enthusiasm like it was a bit crazy to be fair. I fought to sleep soundly for the next few nights that I presume was still due to the excitement.”
Banton’s batting exploits watched him accrue 116.31 MVP points to the month in that discipline alone – more than any other participant.
Although Somerset only missed out to a Blast sought the medial side young wicketkeeper-batsman has set his sights on victory this season.
He said:”The aim is definitely to try and win the next few matches and lift the Specsavers County Championship title at our home ground in September. That would be the dream and that’s what everyone here in Taunton desires.
“If I watched a hundred in the Championship then I’d be the youngest player to get one in each of the significant contests [overtaking Jason Roy], therefore personally I want to do that. Nevertheless, the principal thing is simply to attempt to keep winning games.”
Beyond this, if Banton keeps on generating this August because he has completed the concerns regarding an England call-up will continue to get requested. However, the kid is keen to focus on the here and now.
“Obviously the England white ball team are so robust and have just come off the back of winning the World Cup. It is definitely going to be tough to break in that group but you just never know should you keep on performing then. I’ll get that telephone call.
“This year I’ve done better at white-ball cricket but I am always attempting to increase in the longer format as well. The major objective is definitely to play Test cricket for England but I am just hoping to stay realistic at the moment therefore white-ball cricket will hopefully come .”
