Lewis Hamilton says he wouldn’t have backed out of his scrap by Charles Leclerc in the Italian GP and the couple”could have collided” – if he was not pursuing a sixth Formula 1 name.
Hamilton was hunting down race-winner Leclerc for much of Sunday’s enthralling Grand Prix and the pair went wheel-to-wheel coming the next chicane, but the Mercedes motorist had been thrown off the track and had to cut to avoid contact.
Hamilton questions judgment
FIA describe Leclerc’yellow card’
A crash would probably have destroyed both drivers’ races, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff asserted that Hamilton”was instrumental in not making it an incident”.
But asked if he’d have done anything else if the F1 2019 championship was resolved, Hamilton admitted:”I wouldn’t have moved. We would have ”
Hamilton has been 63 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas using seven races remaining as he seems to become only the second driver in F1 history together with six shingles.
“The driver that goes to the Drivers’ Championship stored Charles and rescued himself” added Wolff, who believed Leclerc’s moves were”possibly over the line”.
“Lewis knew exactly what he was doing, he didn’t lose any bits or components in that episode, but he could have equally decided,’I am not going to let it happen’, and put the 2 cars out.”
Hamilton looking forward to more struggles
Hamilton contested the stewards’ decision to not inflict a brand new penalty on Leclerc and labelled the driving “reckless” on team radio – but insisted he had no issue with”one of the very respectful drivers” at Leclerc.
“There is no absence of admiration,” Hamilton told reporters. “We don’t have a issue, we aren’t in a struggle, I congratulated him once he got out of the automobile.
“Charles is among the very respectful motorists. This is actually the first time that I have gone and having a driver, you understand how they place your car differently next time and possibly approach scenarios that are various. Perhaps I will do a better job next time.”
Hamilton continued:”There is zero issue with ushe did an outstanding job and I really don’t have any difficulty with it, it’s what it is.
“I haven’t talked to him and we don’t have a problem but if we receive a moment together we may talk, only reverse functions and be sure that he is cool that if I am able and that happens and that is cool and that is how we’re rushing.
“From what I understand entering the race you’re supposed to make a difference, today I don’t know if that’s how it is. Nonetheless, it’s great that we are able to race and now proved to be a battle which is good.
“We’ll continue to race and I’m looking forward to many more races together.”
Hamilton pleased to’race like that’
Leclerc has been given the black flag by race stewards, F1’s version of a’yellow card’, and Wolff said he considers that rule will make contact between the drivers”common practice”.
But while Hamilton called for consistency in regards to penalties and rules, he said he’s happy to race difficult.
“If that is the way we’re permitted to race then I shall race like this,” he stated. “Provided that we know that you’re permitted to not leave a car width for example, provided that you aren’t contradicting us and there is a crystal clear message.
“So you’re permitted to run broad even if someone is there and you simply receive a warning flag, and you merely require that once to potentially maintain the guy behind you.
“As long because it’s apparent that that’s how moving ahead it’s ok so I know how to enter battle and it’s the exact same for all the drivers.”
