Lewis Hamilton says that he would not have backed out of his scrap with Charles Leclerc at the Italian GP and the set”could have collided” – if he wasn’t chasing a sixth Formula 1 name.
Hamilton was searching down race-winner Leclerc for much of Sunday’s enthralling Grand Prix and the couple went wheel-to-wheel coming the next chicane, but the Mercedes driver was squeezed off the track and needed to cut across the run-off area to prevent contact.
Hamilton queries Leclerc judgment
FIA describe Leclerc’yellow card’
A crash could likely have destroyed both motorists’ races, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff asserted that Hamilton”was instrumental rather than making it an episode”.
But asked if he’d have done anything else when the F1 2019 championship was solved, Hamilton confessed:”I would not have proceeded. We would have ”
As he seems to become the second driver in history with six crowns hamilton is 63 points ahead of closest challenger Valtteri Bottas left.
“The driver that goes to the Drivers’ Championship stored Charles and rescued himself” added Wolff, who sensed Leclerc’s moves were”maybe over the line”.
“Lewis understood exactly what he was doinghe did not lose any bits or components in that episode, but he could have equally determined,’I’m not going to let it happen’, and place the 2 cars outside.”
Hamilton looking forward to more struggles that are Leclerc
Hamilton questioned the stewards’ decision not to inflict a brand new penalty on Leclerc and labelled the driving as”dangerous” on team radio – but insisted he had no problem with”one of the very respectful drivers” at Leclerc.
“There is not any absence of admiration,” Hamilton told reporters. “We do not have a issue, we aren’t in a fight, I congratulated him when he got out of the automobile.
“Charles is one of the very respectful drivers. This is the first time I have gone wheel-to-wheel with him, and using a driver, you learn how they approach situations that are different and perhaps place your vehicle next time. Perhaps I’ll do a better job next time.”
Hamilton continued:”There is zero problem with people , he did an exceptional job and I don’t have any difficulty with it, it’s what it really is.
“I have not talked to him and also we don’t have a problem but if we get an instant together we may chat, only reverse roles and make sure he is cool that when I am able and that occurs and that is cool and that is how we are racing.
“From what I understand entering the race you’re supposed to leave a difference, I really don’t know whether that is the case. But it’s great that we can race hard and today proved to be.
“We will continue to race and I am looking forward to many more races ”
Hamilton pleased to’race such as that’
Leclerc has been given the black flag by race stewards, F1’s version of a’yellow card’, and Wolff said he considers that rule is likely to make contact between the motorists”common practice”.
But when it came to penalties and rules while Hamilton called for more consistency, he said he’s happy to race.
“If that is how we are allowed to race then I will race like that,” he said. “Provided that you understand that you’re allowed to not leave a car width as an instance, provided that you are not contradicting us and there is a very clear message.
“So you’re permitted to run broad even if a person is there and you only get a warning sign, and you merely require that once to possibly keep the man behind you.
“As long because it’s apparent that that’s how moving forward it’s ok so I understand how to go into battle and it is the same for all the drivers.”
