Joe Cullen claimed his first European Tour title with a victory over Michael van Gerwen month andThe Rockstar told Sky Sports that he considers he is currently capable of challenging for honours on a consistent basis.
The World Grand Prix gets under way and he heads on to Dublin with confidence that although Cullen hasnt progressed past the second round to the Emerald Isle.
The Bradford star has been hailed as a potential winner and that he demonstrated his qualifications at last months European Darts Matchplay, defeating James Wade, Glen Durrant and Van Gerwen on one night at Mannheim.
Obviously to beat Michael in a final – it is difficult enough to conquer Michael at any point. To overcome him in a final does make it that extra bit special, Cullen told Sky Sports.
If I am honest I spoke with Michael van Gerwen about it afterwards. I said to him:You have to feel like that every week He looked at me a bit bemused and that I was like:I knew that nobody could beat on me
If Im at the practice space and I state thatThere is no means Michael van Gerwen can conquer me, 100 per cent of the clinic room will laugh me out from there. I knew that no one could overcome on me.
This was a really surreal feeling and one that I have never felt before, even when I won the two Pro Tour titles. The challenge now is to get back to that feeling on a regular basis.
Before his display on land it was an 2019 for Cullen, who endured opening-round exits at the UK Open and World Matchplay.
His televised win came in the season-opening Pros, but he admits he has now proven to himself that hes capable of scooping stage names.
winning the European Tour this past month confirms what you already understand. I knew I had been good enough to win one but if you are not winning any its alright saying you know you are good.
I have proved over a format I can combine it with the best and theres no reason why I cant go on to win a big.
The Rockstar has only featured in a major semi-final, in which he also surrendered a lead at last years European Championship.
Cullen has also reached the last eight years in each the World Matchplay, UK Open, Masters and World Series Finals, but he believes he is equipped to struggle for the most important honours of the sport.
Im definitely a stage player. I think I moved through three stages. The very first stage I was great and Ive got some excellent outcomes.
The year when I was really great on the stage and got some excellent results but not as good on the floor and I think that its just a case of trying to combine the two today.
The European Championship last year – I got to the semi-finals and ought to have got to the closing. I missed a dart to get there but it should happen to be more comfortable than this, you should not throw a 10-7 lead from a race to 11.
The prompt focus of cullen switches into Dublin which admittedly hasnt been a happy hunting ground for himwith his 3 appearances garnering two victories.
I believe I have to the last 16 on a few times but before you reach the quarter-finals you dont really feel a part of this championship and I feel a good deal of the gamers could agree, he confessed.
Its still a bit new to me – especially with the brief format in the first round. It could be as half an hour. I believe that the after you get within the championship, the more youll be able to judge it.
The format that is double-start separate the boys and the men and Wayne Mardle has always referenced the value of having a definite plan of attack if you are not able to pin your starting dual.
Although Cullen made do not feature within their practice regime players alter their practice routines to compensate for your part.
I believe Im one of the few that doesnt actually practice doubles whatsoever, he explained. I am a believer that if you can hit trebles it is possible to reach doubles. My practice regime is about throwing at trebles wholly.
If you put three on the top wire of the treble 20 no problem. If you consistently keep placing three to the wire of double top in practice it could become an issue and it could become a mental thing.
Even going in the Grand Prix it is no different. Im good enough to reach a smaller target so the bigger target should not be too big of a problem.
The 30-year-old endured a chastening 10-0 defeat at July, however he has the opportunity for redemption because he facesThe Diamond from the first round in the Citywest.
Nevertheless, Cullen disclosed that retribution wont be on his own head contrary to the world.
When Id got beaten 10-0 and obtained absolutely blown away, I would have looked in it in a negative way, but I had shots at pops in 5 out of the 10 legs and it had been a couple of shots, it was not like the odd dart today and again.
It was just one of those days. Me and Ian [White] get on quite well, a long time travel together so there wasnt any malice in its end.
Literally in an hour of the game end we were laughing about that. It was just a freak outcome and I am sure there will not be a repeat of it this moment.
Speculation surrounding the next years Premier League line-up generally begins to mount in this business-end of the year although there are a variety of events over the forthcoming months.
Cullen has made no secret of his desire to incorporate in the competition and he will consider himself unlucky to have missed in 2019.
The three-time PDC title winner was ranked above all nine contenders who showcased in this seasons roadshow and that he admits that his omission was a bitter pill to swallow.
At first glance I really will not lie – when it was announced I was very upset. I had been believing what more do I need to do in order to get chosen, he added.
There was lots of talk about it on social media and Barry Hearn really replied to somebody that questioned why I wasnt inside.
His reply wasJoe is at the upper 16 so hes considered for automatic selection, so at least there was an excuse regarding why I was not getting picked.
Obviously it is a goal [Premier League] but Im trying not to think about it too much since in the previous two years I think I have been a World Championship run off from being majorly from the look-in to get a Premier League spot.
Maybe thats played into my mind going into the World Championship subconsciously. I believe its well-documented that Ive been great at the Worlds.
I try to appear at it in a good way – I am number 16 on earth without a fantastic run at the World Championship therefore that it can not be a poor thing. If you continue getting wins under your belt on TV in large events then you will rocket up the rankings.
Cullens capability has never been in question, but he is now using a stage title under his belt and a far more mature proposal,The Rockstar is primed to reveal that the world of darts his own mettle.
Joe Cullen was speaking to Sky Sports Josh Gorton. Its not long to wait till darts is back on Sky Sports, the World Grand Prix gets under way on Sunday, October 6 October 12 and seven days of coverage continues until the closing on Saturday.
