When Royston Drenthe answers the telephone he is on his way into a photoshoot in Amsterdam. It is for an underwear business, also will comprise a few footballers. “I don’t have a six-pack but they still need me,” he laughs.
Real Madrid the Feyenoord and Everton winger has been willing to try new things. For a character, that has explored interests in perfume, fashion, music and poker, nothing else should come as surprise.
With Kozakken Boys in the next tier of Dutch football, Drenthe is currently enjoying at 32. He was perhaps the most hunted prospect in Europe, or even the world, but his career didn’t go to plan up at age 29.
“The two years that I stopped I needed something new,” states Drenthe. “I simply needed to step out for a little to find myself .”
As the Netherlands’ next celebrity having led his country to victory from the European Under-21s Championship, in addition to claiming the award for the best player of the tournament, Drenthe was hailed At the summer of 2007.
Legendary figures like Luis Figo, Andrea Pirlo and Fabio Cannavaro had won the same award.
“This was an amazing feeling. At when clubs begin requesting you and that European philosopher everything went well it is just like a dream come true. I had to make a choice.
“You will find big clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona. It was not a simple choice to make but that I picked Real Madrid because my step-dad was always a big fan of them.”
Drenthe was just 20, with one season in football behind him, when he transferred into arguably the world team for euros.
“You must take some chances immediately. A whole great deal of folks would say,’it had been too premature for him. Why did he abandon Feyenoord?’ That’s football. You make choices to succeed but occasionally they do not go the way you desire,” he states.
“I felt at home right away because the players were rather wonderful for me and they assisted me. They were enormous stars but they treated me as a normal boy.”
Drenthe tended towards the spectacular. He scored on his debut using a attack that was thumping and featured in his very first season, originally keeping Marcelo. The name was even won by him under Bernd Schuster but dropped from favour.
In a famously demanding club, whose fans had the expectations, Drenthe came. Stress was induced by the strain.
“I was a young lad who arrived to a huge team playing in front of 90,000 people every home game,” he clarifies.
“There came a moment where I had a problem but the people around me talked to me and helped to point me in the ideal direction.”
Loaned out to Hercules following a difficult season in Madrid, advancement on the pitch has been followed closely doubt and by strife .
“It was very good but also very poor. It was a time for the club although I had a great time . They were not paying salaries and that sort of material,” he states.
“At that moment it wasn’t straightforward. I was just like,’If they do not pay wages, I am not coming into coaching’.”
Drenthe went on attack, and found herself a goal for those fans’ frustration as a result.
Another assuring loan spell at Everton turned sour when he had been ostracised by David Moyes amid rumours of indiscipline and a way of life that was wayward.
“Sometimes things happen and I’ve punished for the things I did. It is like seven years. A number of the things that I did, so I don’t even know I did .
“I constantly focused on soccer. You guys believe I didn’t but that I always did. Many folks read things in order that they receive their own view and see things. However, they don’t know me as an individual. It doesn’t bother me.”
Drenthe had a reputation as a playboy and party monster during his career. Wrongly or rightly, the perception has suffered as his priorities have shifted. It does not tally with how he sees .
“I love to help people. I am open. I’m a family man. I Royston, you know? I move with the flow.”
After leaving Real Madrid when his contract expired, Drenthe spent in Alania Vladikavkaz in Russia prior to returning to England and then Sheffield Wednesday, earlier spells in Turkey and the UAE.
After more issues with brokers and wages Drenthe retired from Europe’s biggest clubs clamouring to sign him , only nine years in 2016.
“I had been creating songs but it’s hard to say I was concentrated on one thing. I was busy with plenty of different items,” he states.
“I’ve always enjoyed music. I listen to songs as 19, when I’m glad when I am sad and I listen to music. It always gives me a great feeling.”
Aside from rapping as Roya2Faces, there was also his six children, a clothes shop, a perfume store and a record company to keep him busy.
Last summer he received an offer Henk Fraser, the manager of Sparta Rotterdam, to give football another move.
And now Drentheand Kozakken Boys at the tier facing crowds of at most a few million’s playing alongside his cousin. He is happy to still be playing although it’s not exactly the Bernabeu.
It doesn’t be shared by Drenthe himself, although for observers there will always be a lingering feeling of what could have been.
“No regrets at all. This happens for a reason,” he states. “I don’t regret anything because I am delighted with where I’m and I am happy with where I’ve been. I’m living my life right now.”
