The big five leagues of europe have been warned their dominance of this continent’s soccer landscape won’t be permitted to remain untouched.
A two-day assembly of the European Clubs’ Association (ECA) in Geneva ended with chairman Andrea Agnelli speaking of reforms being set up by 2022, instead of December 2019 as was the case earlier this season.
The abrupt change of deadlines underlines the absence of progress that has been produced by the ECA in discussions over generating a wider degree of competition, more games and greater income from Europe’s three big club contests, including the brand new Europa League two, from 2024.
It’s clear that the clubs, particularly those from nations such as Holland and Poland, respect the’big five’ – the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and also Ligue 1 – to the modifications because being barriers .
“Uefa distributes money to large, medium and small nations,” said Edwin van der Sar, the Ajax main executive.
“The big five leagues collect cash from all around the world and keep it in their particular jurisdiction, plus they get solidarity payments from Uefa. This is not sustainable.”
It’s understood the Premier League’s leading clubs – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United – were represented at the gathering in Switzerland and are not the object of their ECA’s irritation but the championships themselves.
“You can see who is investing and who is protecting individual interests,” said HJK Helsinki chief executive Aki Riihilahti.
Proposals for a Champions League comprising four teams of eight groups, 20 clubs no longer having to qualify along with with 14 games, have now been dropped.
Agnelli expects to have an alternate plan ready by next March, that could be opened up for debate, with the purpose of having a format for football consented by 2022.
Agnelli, who is also the chairman of both Juventus, made a thinly veiled threat that he was ready to proceed even when they don’t come on board although it is probably the leagues will be opposed.
“We won’t get past an 80% satisfaction rate,” he explained. “That is the stage we get to so as to accept any motion at ECA.
“There are some deadlocks and we must put together the numerous elements and concerns to find a solution that suits most.
“There has to be an answer by 2022 since that is when Uefa head to market to your TV rights from 2024.”
