The large five leagues of europe have been warned their dominance of this continent’s soccer landscape won’t be permitted to continue unchecked.
A two-day assembly of the European Colleges’ Association (ECA) in Geneva ended with chairman Andrea Agnelli speaking of reforms being set up by 2022, as opposed to December 2019 as was the case before this season.
The sudden change of deadlines underlines the absence of progress that’s been made by the ECA in discussions over creating a wider degree of contest, more games and greater income from Europe’s three big club competitions, including the new Europa League two, by 2024.
It is clear the clubs, especially those from countries like Poland and Holland, respect the’big five’ – Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, the Premier League and also Ligue 1 – to the modifications because being major barriers .
“Uefa brings money to big, medium and smallish nations,” said Edwin van der Sar, the Ajax main executive.
“The big five leagues collect cash from all around the world and keep it in their particular jurisdiction, and they receive solidarity payments from Uefa. This is not sustainable.”
It is known the Premier League nightclubs – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United – were represented in the 169-member gathering in Switzerland and are not the object of the aggravation of this ECA but the leagues themselves.
“You can easily see who’s investing and who is protecting individual interests,” explained HJK Helsinki chief executive Aki Riihilahti.
Suggestions for a Champions League with 14 matches along with having to qualify, have been dropped.
Agnelli hopes to have an alternative plan ready by next March, that could then be opened for debate, with the intention of having a format for football consented by 2022.
Agnelli, who is also the chairman of both Juventus, forced a veiled threat that he was ready to proceed if they fail to come on board although it is probably the exact leagues will again be opposed.
“We will not get past an 80% satisfaction rate,” he said. “That’s the stage we get to in order to approve any movement at ECA.
“There are a few deadlocks and we have to put together the many elements and concerns to discover a solution that suits most.
“There has to be a response by 2022 since that is if Uefa head to market to your TV rights from 2024.”
