Europe five leagues have been warned their growing dominance of the football landscape of the continent won’t be allowed to continue unchecked.
A two-day assembly of the European Clubs’ Association (ECA) at Geneva ended with chairman Andrea Agnelli talking of reforms being set up by 2022, rather than December 2019 as was the case before this season.
The abrupt switch of deadlines underlines the lack of advancement that has been made from the ECA in talks over creating a wider degree of competition, more matches and higher income from Europe’s three key club contests, including the brand new Europa League 2, by 2024.
It’s clear the clubs, especially those from nations like Poland and Holland, regard the’big five’ – the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 – to the modifications as major obstacles .
“Uefa brings money to big, medium and little countries,” said Edwin van der Sar, the Ajax main executive.
“The large five leagues collect money from all over the world and keep it within their particular jurisdiction, and they receive solidarity payments from Uefa. This is not sustainable.”
It’s known the Premier League’s major clubs – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United – aren’t the object of this ECA’s irritation but the leagues and were represented at the 169-member amassing in Switzerland themselves.
“You can easily see who’s investing and who’s protecting individual interests,” explained HJK Helsinki chief executive Aki Riihilahti.
Proposals for a Champions League containing four groups of eight groups, with 14 games and 20 clubs no longer having to qualify, have been dropped.
Agnelli hopes to have an alternate plan ready with the intention of using a format for European football agreed by 2022.
It is likely the very same leagues will be opposed but Agnelli, who’s also the chairman of Juventus, created a threat he was ready to move even if they fail to come on board.
“We won’t get beyond an 80% satisfaction rate,” he said. “That’s the stage we get to so as to approve any movement at ECA.
“You can find some deadlocks and we must put together the numerous components and concerns to discover a solution that suits most.
“There has to be a response by 2022 since that’s if Uefa go to market for the TV rights from 2024.”
