Europe five leagues have been warned their dominance of the football landscape of this continent will not be allowed to remain untouched.
A two-day assembly of the European Colleges’ Association (ECA) in Geneva finished with chairman Andrea Agnelli speaking of reforms being in place by 2022, rather than December 2019 as was the case earlier this year.
The sudden change of deadlines underlines the absence of advancement that’s been produced from the ECA in discussions over generating a larger degree of contest, more matches and higher earnings from Europe’s three major club competitions, including the new Europa League 2, from 2024.
It is clear the clubs, particularly those from second-tier countries like Poland and Holland, regard the’big five’ – Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, the Premier League and Ligue 1 – since being major obstacles to the modifications being required.
“Uefa brings cash to big, medium and little countries,” said Edwin van der Sar, the Ajax main executive.
“The large five leagues collect cash from all over the world and keep it within their particular jurisdiction, plus they get solidarity payments from Uefa. This is not sustainable.”
It’s known the Premier League’s major nightclubs – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United – were represented in the amassing in Switzerland and aren’t the object of the ECA’s aggravation but the championships themselves.
“You can see who’s investing and who’s protecting individual pursuits,” said HJK Helsinki chief executive Aki Riihilahti.
Initial suggestions for a Champions League having to be eligible along with with 14 matches, have now been dropped.
Agnelli hopes to have an alternative plan ready by next March, which can subsequently be opened for debate, with the purpose of using a format for European football agreed by 2022.
Agnelli, who’s also the chairman of Juventus, created a veiled threat that he was prepared to move even when they fail to come on board although It’s likely the leagues will again be opposed.
“We won’t get beyond an 80% satisfaction rate,” he explained. “That is the stage we get to in order to accept any movement at ECA.
“There are a few deadlocks and we have to put together the various elements and concerns to discover a solution that fits most.
“There needs to be an answer by 2022 because that is when Uefa go to market for the TV rights from 2024.”
