Harris’ depart brought Smith to the crease, with the Headingley Test using a concussion having sat out he suffered when he was struck on the throat by an Archer delivery in the second match of the sequence at Lord’s.
Archer relished his duel with Smith (28no) ongoing, cranking up his speed into the 30-year-old after working from the low eighties earlier in his spell.
Stokes, however, came forcing another breakthrough, only for Marnus Labuschagne (49no) to endure a review using a hooping in-swinger simply set to brush his leg stump.
Before Craig Overton, Leach’s Somerset team-mate, obtained his first bowl in a house Test for England labuschagne, promoted with Usman Khawaja dropped to # 3 edged spinner Jack Leach only wide of Stokes at slide.
